Park Operations Laborer- Seasonal

 

REPORTS TO: City Forester / Facilities & Grounds Superintendent

FLSA Status: Non-exempt                                                   

Starting Salary: $10.50 per hour / $12.00 per hour for Class B CDL holders

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs heavy and light maintenance work on City park areas, rights-of-way, and infrastructure, including reconstruction, construction, and maintenance performing Park Operations related tasks in a variety of trades not requiring journeyman level skills.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions:

  1. Perform a wide variety of tasks required for maintenance and repair of parks and recreation department areas and facilities. Examples include, but are not limited to, grass cutting, tree trimming, snow removal, janitorial, construction, equipment operation, etc.
  2. May be required to assist in performing various City Ordinance abatement tasks regarding tree and grass/weed ordinances on private property.
  3. Operate all equipment and tools in a safe and prudent manner, including use of safety harness, kidney belt and other appropriate or required safety gear, being responsible for safety of self, co-workers and the public.
  4. May assist in performing athletic field and court maintenance and playground equipment and surface maintenance.
  5. May assist in performance of special projects and tasks as directed by supervisors.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Keep simple records and routine reports.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  1. Talking, hearing, sitting, reaching, climbing, stooping, grasping, balancing, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying.
  2. Normal mental and visual attention with normal hand-eye coordination.
  3. Corrected vision measured at 20/20.
  4. Wide range of physical effort required, including lifting or moving (carrying) of heavy material (over 60 lbs.) in difficult positions and/or for extended periods of time.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

Exposure to all outdoor weather conditions for extended periods of time, normal indoor repair shop conditions, and normal office conditions.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

3 months experience in Park Operations or related field preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that may be representative, but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

1.        Able to follow written, verbal, or diagrammed instructions.

  1. Able to use tools commonly utilized in construction and maintenance trades.
  2. Able and willing to perform heavy manual labor requiring physical strength and dexterity.
  3. Able to use hand tools and operate equipment safely and effectively.
  4. Able and willing to accept new techniques, tasks, and training.
  5. Demonstrate willingness to assist co-workers with responsibilities when needed.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids that may be representative, but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

Pickup truck with trailer, various sized tractors, backhoe, lawn mower, chain saw, string trimmer, edgers, trencher, skid loader, stump grinder, chipper, bucket truck, wheel loader, communication equipment, building maintenance and janitorial equipment. 

License(s)/Certification Required:

Valid Class F Driver's License required; ability to acquire Class E within 2 weeks of hire. Class B CDL preferred.
