Park Laborer

Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation                                                                                                                  

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


General Definition of Work

Performs unskilled work maintaining trees, shrubs, turf and landscape plantings on City property, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Performs a wide variety of tasks required for maintenance and repair of City owned areas and facilities. Examples include, but are not limited to, grass cutting and trimming; tree pruning, planting, mulching, watering, weed removal, planting annual and perennial plants, mulching, sports field preparation, leaf collection, snow removal, janitorial and custodial services; construction, equipment operation, etc.

Investigates resident requests for maintenance and reports conditions back to supervisor.

Performs light carpentry, concrete, asphalt, and/or building maintenance work related to park maintenance.

Performs various City Ordinance abatement tasks regarding tree and grass/weed ordinances on private property.

Operates all equipment and tools in a safe and prudent manner, including use of safety harness and other appropriate or required safety gear, being responsible for safety of self, co-workers and the public.

Performs athletic field and court maintenance and playground equipment and surface maintenance.

Performs tasks and assignments in a professional manner in accordance with City Safety Policy.

Keeps and submits simple records and routine reports.

Cleans and maintains equipment and tools.

Performs leaf collection and snow removal duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General  knowledge of the common practices, tools, supplies and materials, terminology and safety precautions of the park maintenance, building maintenance, horticulture, arboriculture, grounds maintenance trades; general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building supplies and materials; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required.  Ability to pass minimum qualifications of Park Laborer position in Park Operations Skill Based Pay Program.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration, and; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Valid Class E driver's license required

Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License -Class A (w/ air brake endorsement) within 12 months of hire

First Aid / CPR /AED Certification required within 6 months of hire

Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator Technician Certification within 6 months of hire
