Swim Lesson Instructor - Part Time

                       

REPORTS TO:         Recreation Manager and Lesson Coordinator

FLSA STATUS:       Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for planning, coordinating and teaching private and group swim lessons, and  learn-to-swim and water safety courses

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions:

  1. Be familiar with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels
  2. Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants, so they can meet course objectives
  3. Actively supervise participants in aquatic programs; providing proper guidance and safety direction needed through interaction and instruction.
  4. Cover all material required in a level
  5. Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress 

Marginal Functions:

  1. Performs special projects and tasks as assigned by the Aquatic Supervisor.
  2. Assists other departments as needed to implement citywide activities.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands:  Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of this job.

  1. Sitting, talking, hearing, walking, swimming, smelling.
  2. Concentrated mental and visual attention with normal hand eye coordination required.
  3. Clarity of vision at 20 inches corrected or uncorrected.
  4. Occasional lifting and moving of 1 to 60 lb. items.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions:  Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

      Exposure to pool and cleaning chemicals, chemically treated water, with exposure to varied weather conditions.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Currently enrolled or have graduated from high school or GED program.

Experience: Previous experience in swim instructor is required and program management preferred.

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

  1. Working knowledge of aquatic facility management and programming.
  2. Good knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies required for specialized Aquatic activities.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, patrons, general public on a constant and consistent basis.
  4. Ability to organize, supervise and evaluate program operations.
  5. Ability to enforce rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the facility.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  7. Ability to work evenings and weekends year round.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

Operation of pool pumps and filtration system, chlorinating systems, PH systems, computerized chemical feed equipment, pool vacuum and cleaning equipment.  Ability to operate safety equipment, including rescue tube and spine board, resuscitator mask, and Automatic External Defibrillator.

License(s)/Certification(s) Required:  American Red Cross CPR Certification or American Red Cross Waterpark Lifeguard Certification and Water Safety Instructor is preferred, but not required.
