POSITION TITLE: Building Inspector

REPORTS TO: Building/Zoning Commissioner

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Pay Grade: 8

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the inspection and enforcement of building codes and ordinances; ensures that all phases of construction, alteration and repair adhere to plans, specifications and compliance with City codes.


Essential Functions:
1. Inspect generally residential construction sites, buildings, and structures for conformance to building, electrical, plumbing, framing, mechanical, and fire safety codes and ordinances.
2. Respond to citizen concerns regarding potential violations.
3. Check routine plans and specifications for compliance with codes regulating buildings as adopted by the City.
4. Advise the public, contractors, and builders regarding building codes, laws and requirements.
5. Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive records of inspections, violation notices, and investigations.
6. Approve acceptable work or indicate revisions necessary for code or ordinance compliance.
7. Has excellent communication skills.

Marginal Functions:
1. Represent Building Department at municipal court.
2. Perform disaster assessment inspections.
Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
1. Talking, hearing, sitting, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, grasping.
2. Normal mental and visual attention.
3. Corrected vision measured at 20/20.
4. Negligible physical effort required, including lifting 1 - 5 lb. items.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
Exposure to most weather and normal office conditions.


High school diploma or GED.

3 - 5 years in construction trades or related field with experience as an inspector.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
1. Experience and knowledge of requirements for means of egress, health, safety, and general welfare of occupants.
2. Experience dealing with a variety of people on a professional level.
3. Experience with basic construction methods, materials, and safety standards.
4. Able to analyze and interpret plans/blueprints, and check that construction is in conformance.
5. Experience with building codes and ordinances.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids that may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
Personal computer and related software and normal office equipment.

License(s)/Certification(s) Required:
Valid Missouri Driver's License, Certification as an ICC Residential Inspector, Certified Property Maintenance Inspector.
